World War One created the need for the mass movement of men and armaments to the front line and led to two thousand miles of 60cm gauge track being laid down and the supply of some 1500 American & British built locomotives to the British, Canadian, Australian and American front lines. The text includes an outline history of tactical light railways, notes on locomotive development and detailed works and running numbers of the main locomotive classes.
